White-Thorn and the talking bird

I illustrated the following tale "White-thorn and the talking bird" of the Storytime Magazine November issue. Here's the process and the illustrations!
I imagined the story setted in the Pre Revolutionary France because some elements in the story fit well in that period, the first sketch below on the left was the first idea for White-thorn and her mom's old and ruined house. I chose the one on the right because it was more suitable for those years; as for the castle I was inspired by Manor de la Bouverie. Since it's a folk tale I wanted to use different colors from the reality.
Other sketches for the illustration of the cow and how the horse could looked like, maybe seaweeds instead of mane and tail? Or perhaps a long waterfall?
I loved exploring and reasearching materials for this story, from the first sketches to the color palettes.
I wanted to start with colder colors and ending with warmer ones, to differentiate the sadder beginning from the happier ending.
Thank you for watching!
